Are you planning to pick up a bargain this Black Friday?

Make sure you’re shopping without harming the planet or animals!

Here’s how to be an ethical shopper this Black Friday.

  1. Buy from ethical companies

Make sure you buy from companies that make their goods ethically: pay workers a fair wage, provide safe working conditions, and incorporate environmentally conscious practices.

To understand if a brand is ethical, check out its policy or mission page. If it is, they’ll likely have extensive information available about their ethical practices and list their certifications (like Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) or Fair Wear Foundation).

For our part, we’re proud to say that most of our clothing is made in WRAP certified factories, we use only water-based ink, and our products are all shipped in recycled packaging.

  1. Make sure what you’re buying is cruelty-free

No animals should be harmed in the name of fashion, beauty, or any other industry, right? Look for companies that can reassure you they’re products are cruelty-free.

With cosmetics and household products, look for certifications like the Leaping Bunny to guarantee no harm to animals was caused. When it comes to clothing companies, most cruelty-free brands will openly say so on their website and social media accounts.

  1. Choose companies that give back

Consistent monthly donations are what keep us going! The easiest way to give monthly? Patreon. By far the easiest! You can pledge as little as $1 per month and that $1 will go toward fencing, barn builds, feeding the animals, vet bills, transportation, equipment, medicines, supplements, utilities, and so much more. If all of our supporters donated $1 per month, there would be a Rancho Relaxo in a few different states across the United States by now. 😆 If you can only afford $1 per month, so you say to yourself, "What is that going to do?!" I can answer that for you. A LOT. A WHOLE LOT. Because of those who signed up to donate $1 per month, we have expanded our home base by 10x the size for the animals. You can even sign up and give it as a gift to someone who follows Rancho Relaxo for the holidays! Thank you all so much for the constant love and support. Want to pick up a lovely new item, and contribute to a cause you believe in? Shop from companies that donate a portion of their profits to charitable organizations or non-profits!

However, beware of companies that use this as a marketing trick. Find out how much of the profit is actually donated (sometimes it’s just 1-2 percent, which is very low).

Did you know we give back 10% of our profits to animal rescue and environmental organizations

  1. Buy local if you can

Buying from independent, locally owned businesses rather than big, national chains helps strengthen the economy of your community.

Today’s economy is dominated by fewer and larger companies, making it difficult for new businesses to form.

When you shop from small, local shops, more money is kept in the community. Research also shows local businesses are linked to better income and benefits for employees.

On top of that, there’s less transportation and pollution – so it’s less harmful to the environment!

  1. Say “no” to plastic!

Our planet is literally drowning in plastic, which is turning our oceans into a minefield for the animals.

Help reduce plastic waste by refusing to have your new items wrapped in plastic or packed in plastic bags.

Replace them with a “Small Acts Multiplied by Millions” reusable cotton tote bag instead – they’re practical and super cute!

  1. Buy items that will last

We love clothes and shopping so following this mantra can sometimes be hard! But it’s something we always try to encourage clients to do, make more of your own wardrobe and try to buy pieces that compliment the pieces you’ve already got. Sometimes a new belt or knitwear can totally change how you’ve worn a something last year making it feel like a totally new and different outfit!! So when buying new things, think of how many wears you’ll get out of it and if it will go with your favourite wardrobe staples. If they do you’ll get so much use of them and they’ll be something you fall back on all year round. 🙌🏻 . . . . #buylesschoosewellmakeitlast #covetedstyling #personalstyle #ifyouloveitwearit #discoverunder2k #sustainablefashion #styleblogger #inspirationalquotes

One of the best ways to be an ethical shopper is to invest in things that will last.

Fast fashion – buying cheap, trendy clothes which you quickly replace with new ones – is detrimental for the environment. Choose well and invest in items that will last!
