A question that is regularly popping up in vegan groups is whether or not it is healthy to feed their canine companion a purely plant-based diet.

When grabbing for the giant bag of dog food that lists chicken, pork, beef, venison, or salmon as the first ingredient, it is logical to question whether or not there is a safe alternative.

From an ethical standpoint, these purchases are supporting the cruel animal agriculture corporations that vegans are fighting to end. On the perspective of health, dogs with ailments such as cancer, allergies, and heart problems are often put on a mostly vegan diet to combat them. Especially when comparing a balanced and supplemented vegan diet to that of processed dog food that uses slaughterhouse waste products, it is quite appealing.

But is it the best choice?

Dogs are classified as Carnivora, but have evolved to be able to also derive nutrients from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. While it is no surprise that they would choose a cut of meat over a pile of vegetables, that does not necessarily correlate to them needing it in order to meet all of their nutrient requirements.

According to research compiled by Hill’s Pet, the term “opportunivore” might be best suited for dogs because they are able to thrive on both plant and animal matter. Their preference is strictly what is made available to them.

The current problem to have a definitive answer to this hot debate is that not enough long-term research has been conducted to 100% deduce that an all vegan diet is healthy for dogs.

Ultimately the dogs individual health needs have to be taken into consideration coupled with plenty of research. From there it is a personal choice. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss any changes to your dogs diet, and follow-up with routine blood work and checkups.  The only sure way to not need to feed your furry companion meat?

Consider rescuing a rabbit, guinea pig, or other herbivorous animal who you can share your delicious plant-based meals with.
