Something about the combination of chocolate-hazelnut seriously challenges our self control. It’s sweet, but not too sweet…  in the kind of way that makes us crave it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert (and everything in between).

If you love the sweet treat as much as we do, we have good news for you because February 5th is World Nutella Day. (Not that you need an excuse to indulge — hazelnuts are full of fiber, good fats, and vitamins! And studies show chocolate also has a bunch of health benefits of its own.)

Even though Nutella isn’t vegan (it has whey and skim milk!) — we’re still celebrating with dairy-free, plant-based, chocolate-hazelnut creations. And luckily, making vegan versions of Nutella is super easy.

Homemade plant-based Nutella recipe

dairy free nutella

This homemade vegan “nutella” recipe from Minimalist Baker requires just FOUR ingredients: hazelnuts, vanilla extract, sea salt, and dairy-free dark chocolate. And unlike DIY almond butter (which we love but can sometimes take foreverrrrr), this recipe takes less than 30 minutes.

If that’s too much — go for the store-bought spreads like Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter Blend.

We love our chocolatey spread straight up on a spoon or slathered on a banana, but if you’re feeling fancy check out these 11 dairy-free, plant-based recipes with “nutella”

My idea of a balanced diet is ______________. Fill in the blank! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My answer has changed over the years, but right now, I would say a diet that includes a generous amount of veggies and greens🥬 , some fruit 🍎 (I would eat way more fruit if I lived in a tropical climate or California where the fruit legit tastes like candy), lots of plant proteins like lentils/beans/tofu/tempeh along with lots of healthy fats like nuts/seeds/avocados/olive oil/coconut 🥑 ⁣ ⁣⁣ And that same diet makes spontaneous room for treats, and sometimes those treats are made with wholesome ingredients (like this vegan, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly NUTELLA BROWNIE CAKE, recipe on the blog), but sometimes they aren’t as wholesome and that’s okay. As long as I feel good (physically and mentally) and eat lots of wholesome, colorful foods from nature on a regular basis…that’s okay with me. In fact, that’s more than okay with me! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Yesterday I baked a legit incredible cinnamon roll cake 🍰 with regular flour and regular sugar. And it tasted like heaven. So I ate 3 slices in about 20 minutes. And later when my boyfriend wanted to have date night at a Mexican restaurant, I ate guac and fried tortilla chips + a spicy margarita for dinner. And I feel fine about it! And even better, my body knows me well because this morning, it asked me to feed it kale! So I gave my body some kale (and lentils and sauerkraut). And that is what I call a #balanceddiet. ⁣ ⁣ What’s a balanced diet look like for you?👇🏽
