Did you know that 821 million people worldwide still suffer from hunger in 2018?

October 16th is World Food Day. For the occasion, we’re spreading the word on the number one thing you can to do help: adopt a sustainable diet.

Not sure where to start? Here are 3 easy steps you can do today:

1. Ditch meat and dairybaskets of fresh greens

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) defines a sustainable diet as one that has a low environmental impact.

Animal agriculture puts a major strain on natural resources.

Producing one pound of beef uses up the equivalent of a year’s worth of showers!

Incorporating more plant-based proteins into your diet in lieu of meat or (better yet!) going fully plant-based is your best option to reduce your carbon footprint.

2. Shop locallystand of local produce

Being mindful of how far your food has traveled is an important component of a sustainable diet.

Shopping at the farmer’s market or picking seasonal produce over exotic fruits and vegetables at the grocery store are both good first steps toward eating more sustainably.

Can’t find good local produce for a reasonable price in your area? Look for a community garden or be the first in your neighborhood to petition for one.

3. Waste lesspile of trash on the ground

A typical American household wastes around 650 lbs of food every year.

To defy this alarming statistic, stick to a weekly shopping list, meal prep, and repurpose leftovers.

If you want to take it a step further, compost your food scraps to mitigate your waste AND nourish the soil!

If you live in an urban area, check if your city has a curbside composting program.
